Most of that day we spent riding along a riverbed until we pitched our tents in a beautiful hidden spot in the valley with water for the horses, our first dinner over the gas cooker and lots of tocu-tocus (fire flies) who lit up the surrounding forest like disco lights. It was surreal to think that our trip had finally started…

The next day we kept following the river bed and at some stage during the afternoon were surprised by Yayo who caught up with us, bringing some food for the horses and bread for us. He also found us some accomodation for the night in an empty house which the gauchos use when they pass through the area. we put the horses into the field in front of the house and were glad to have a roof over our heads when it started raining cats and dogs and mules that night... the next morning we were spending hours again trying to tie the saddle bags with all our stuff onto the pack mule (you really need a degree in knot making for that) when we got talking to a gaucho who also stayed in the house over night. his name was beto and he invited us up to his estancia in the mountains...how high we didnt realised when we continued along the river bed until the steep climb began...only a few metres up we nearly lost philippe: his saddle slid back onto the bum of santy and he was about to fall off when i had a look back to see if todo bien...we kept climbing up the narrow path and i´m sure the landscape was beautiful, but i kept my eyes fixed on the mountainside in order not to panic. it was just too much for a mussle pusher (person from the flat regions of northern germany) and i was glad when after 6 hours we finally reached beto´s finca. below are the pictures of his 3000m high finca candado and surroundings where i spent my birthday. after a day of rest, beto brought us back to the main road, this time luckily riding along more manageable paths (i would have asked for a helicopter for me and baja otherwise).
